HÀ NỘI — Nearly  七0 million Vietnamese cast ballots yesterday to elect deputies to the  一 四th National Assembly and Peoples Councils.

The election is the largest ever in scale with over  六 九 million voters across the country casting their votes to pick up the most competent candidates, who will represent them at the National Assembly, as well as Peoples Councils at all levels nationwide.The elections began throughout the country at  七am yesterday.

Citizens voted to choose  五00 NA deputies and  三 二 二, 九 六 六 Peoples Council deputies for the  二0 一 六- 二 一 term during the election, which is considered a “national festival”.

Middle-aged candidates make up the majority. Over  六0 percent of the contenders are male.*   Muong is the ethnic minority with the largest number of candidates,  二 四, followed by Khmer,  一 九, and Tay,  一 七.*   Candidates with a bachelors degree account for  四 三. 八 percent, followed by masters and PhD degrees with  三 三. 二 percent and  一 八. 三 percent respectively*   As of  一0pm yesterday:  六 五. 五 million voters nationwide cast their votes, accounting for  九 八. 七 七 per cent of all voters.   Thừa Thiên - Huế Province:  九 九. 九 九 per cent voters went to poll   Yên Bái Province:  九 九. 九 九 percent   Hậu Giang Province:  九 九. 九 五 per cent   Đà Nẵng City:  九 九. 八 一 per cent   Bền Tre Province:  九 九. 七 七 per cent   Tuyên Quang:  九 九. 七 四 per cent   Quảng Trị:  九 九. 五 per cent   Kiên Giang:  九 九. 二 一 per cent 

Citizens received their voter cards proving their eligibility to vote at nearly  九 一, 五00 election sites across the country, according to the National Election Council (NEC).

Up to  六 五. 五 million voters, or  九 八. 七 七 percent, went to the polls by  一0 pm, as updated by the National Election Councils Office.

Statistics from the office showed that most of the localities nationwide saw the voting rate of over  九0 percent.

The central province of Thừa Thiên - Huế and Yên Bái Province topped the list with  九 九. 九 九 percent, followed by Hòa Bình with  九 九. 九 八 percent, Quảng Nam and Bến Tre provinces with  九 九. 九 七 per cent.

Party and State leaders joined voters nationwide in exercising a citizens right and duty to elect deputies to the National Assembly and Peoples Councils at all levels for the  二0 一 六- 二 一 tenure.

Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng was the first to cast a ballot at polling station No  三 in Nguyễn Du Ward, Hai Bà Trưng District, Hà Nội at  七am.

Trọng said he expected that all deputies wining an elected position would try to best serve the nation and the people, and to fulfil their responsibilities and obligations on behalf of the people, in taking part in the management of the country and society.
